Description

I'm putting in my first food plot this year, does anyone have some tips or comment you can give me? What kind of food plot do you have in your woods? I would be great for some feedback

Getting ready for my food plot installation. Tonight i sprayed round up on two of my three plots. I found that it is the best way to control weed in my plot. In about two week i will plant Winter pz by Evolved Habitat and Soybeen and winter wheat from the o s Famous Antler King. Last year I tried Turnip and Brassica with great success. our plat grew over 24" tall and the turnip was as big as a small basketball. The only thing is it is a plot that deer visit after the season is over. I call it great for holding deer from year to year. This year i am trying some different tactics with the soybean and peas. I will keep you up to date with video and picture of my success. Thank Again For Stopping by HuntinWNY.com

Roundup kills from the top of the weed down and not from the root or migration through soil so in general you should spray the ground first and let it kill the weeds before plowing it under.

Take the time to really think about what you are trying to acheive. What do farmers have growing around this plot that might draw them to the feilds rather than your plot? When are you planning to hunt it? Archery through muzzleloader? To give you an example, the property I hunt has five food plots. They range from 2 1/2 acres to 1/4 acre, each have different plants in them. One plot does better pre rut, prime rut a different plot does better. Temperature can play a key role in what they are looking to browse on. Real cold temps, they seem to go to the brassicas. To start, kill the weeds.Get a real good soil test, not just ph, but a complete analaysis(Cornell Cooperative Ex).I enjoy this topic, although I'm not an expert. I can help you not make the same mistakes we have. Any more ???, feel free!

I heard you should use weed killer(round up) before you plan on doing anything, when do you think is a good time like now before anything starts to grow?

we spray round up one month before tilling on a new plot and may also spray it twice

I think you just need to take the time and do it right. You will get the best results. This year we are planting soy beans
